No more clutter, no more stress

Spring is finally here, and many of us would have got on the marigolds and dusters and set to work on the big spring clean. The sense of reward when we finally sit down having dusted and cleaned every nook and crannie of a house is one hard to rival, a cup of tea tastes all the better when it’s been earned.

decluttering hacks

One thing many of us can forget, is the need for a deep declutter alongside the deep clean. If anything, we should declutter first. Having excess items and clutter around the home has been linked to both stress and low concentration levels. Oakwood doors: the leading UK provider of internal oak doors, have shared some clever little decluttering hacks to help free up some space in the home and the mind. Try a couple of these out and let us know how you get along!

  • Throw away, give away, or donate one item a day. We aren’t saying you have to get rid of all of your possessions, but trying this method will massively cut down the amount of clutter you have by the end of the year, what’s better, you can continue it the year after! It feels rewarding when you manage to give something you no longer use to someone who will.
  • If you find it difficult to get rid of clothes, try using the hanger method of clearing things out. Once you’ve gone through manually and thrown everything you definitely won’t wear again, start putting washed clothes back in the wardrobe with the hangers facing the opposite way. Within a few months it will be easy to see what you are and aren’t wearing, and odds are you won’t wear those shorts that are collecting dust at the back of a draw again, so get rid!
  • Set smaller goals to start with. Maybe you’ll challenge yourself to fill a box or a bag with items you don’t need or use. Once this challenge is completed, start it all over again. The key is to try and be a little ruthless with yourself. If you’ve considered throwing or donating an item a few times and you find yourself looking at it again undecided, it’s time to go. If a bag or box seems too much, then just set yourself the goal of 5-10 minutes a day.
  • Use a number system. This can be great for sorting things into categories, for example if you chose the number 5, you’d choose 5 things to throw, 5 things to donate, and 5 things to find a proper home within your home for. It might be an idea to still make a box up for things you just can’t do away with, but to get them into storage or in the attic. After all, as the old saying goes, out of sight out of mind.

The main thing is to just go for it! Get it into your head that this is what you need to do and keep thinking of the reasons why. Change your views so you aren’t thinking of it as decluttering, but uncluttering, and keep in mind the benefits.

5 Essential considerations when viewing a House

As exciting as buying a home is, the stress that can come with it is huge. The financial investment alone can cause our hairs to turn grey, and it’s hard to be 100% sure you’re getting the right place. Your home is a reflection of yourself, and it’s important you’re fully happy with it. In our experience, the more preparation you have, the less bumpy the ride.

buying a home

It can be helpful to listen to the advice of a few people who have been there and done it, and CNM Online, the leading radiator and heating company, have shared their experiences with us. You still have to be prepared for anything, but these top tips and considerations should help take some of the pressure off.

  1. Visit the property in both sunshine and rain if you can. It’s easy to fall in love with a place when the sun is shining, and it’s great to get a feel for natural lighting and whether your garden will get any sun during the warmer months, but visiting when it’s raining is also essential. You want to make sure you don’t just love it because the sun is shining, make sure you’d still be happy there when it’s all doom and gloom outside. The rain will also allow you to check for any leaks.
  1. Location, location, location. Make sure you are fully familiar with the area and your distance to all the essentials, Drs, schools, supermarkets and post offices. The countryside does have its appeals, but you’ve got to make sure you’ve really thought about it logistically. Living in the city centre might seem ideal, but you may be miles away from a good supermarket or have to pay extortionate rates to park. It’s all about finding the right balance and what works for you.
  1. Don’t just look at it, use it. We can all try and be a little too polite when viewing a house, treating it like an art gallery and not daring to touch any of its contents. Turn the taps on, check the locks on the windows and doors, ask all of the questions you may have on your mind. Be thorough, they’re trying to sell the house so should be more than happy to help.
  1. Check the boiler and the heating system. Make sure all of the radiators are working, and check how old they are. Some older models may be inefficient and use a lot of energy to heat the home, if you’re planning on spending a long time there it may be worth calculating the cost of replacing these. You’ll also want to check how old the boiler is and when it was last serviced, as any problems with that in the near future and you’ll be a pretty penny out of pocket.
  1. Hey neighbour! Before you put pen to paper it might well be worth having a chat with your neighbours. Ask them questions about the area and get a feel for them as people. We also advise visiting the property in the evening when everyone is home, to see if you can hear much coming from the neighbours or the neighbourhood. A little noise never hurt anyone, but if the property has thin walls you’ll need to consider this.

History of the Mobile Phone

Busy lifestyles call for a digital assistant that can keep up with you: enter the mobile phone as we know it. Ready to rock your day? Don’t forget to check your phone first! Our phones may allow us to connect with the people that matter most to us, but they do so much more now. Keeping track of appointments and world news has become truly effortless. Yet the origins of the modern day phone are far from being this flexible or even useful, but very much still ground-breaking and revolutionary. Indeed, these rudimentary versions set the stage for what we use and enjoy to this day. The use of mobile technology has skyrocketed over the last ten years, opening the door for more than just mere communication. A large percentage of online sales are conducted by mobile phone instead of being done at the desk. If you want to order a taxi, you may turn to an app faster than the classic telephone directory. We’ve come a long way since 1876, and that’s always a good thing.

The timeline below presents the history of the telephone in a clear, easy-to-understand format.

How to Make Friends Easily

Making friends can often be very difficult, and some people find it tougher than others to make new buddies. While there is no way of easily attracting friends and becoming more sociable, there are several things that you can do in order to change your current situation and get some more pals. Here are a few of the things you can do which will help you to get more friends:

Socialize more

This might seem like an obvious piece of advice, but a lot of people don’t do this when trying to get more friends. If you want to make friends, you need to make some kind of effort. If you’re not going to school or college, this becomes even more difficult, as it’s tough to socialize in a world where you don’t interact daily with many people. If you have a job, try to make friends with more people in the work place, either by attending more social events or by striking up more conversations at the water cooler or coffee machine.

Make Friends

Go online

If you’re hoping to date somebody, online dating might be something that you’d like to try. However, the online world isn’t just for those looking for romance. In fact, there are hundreds of chat rooms where you can meet new friends – finding good chat rooms can be a difficult task, however. Be friendly and don’t try to argue with other people all the time, and you’ll be able to find yourself some online friends as well as offline friends. In some cases, you may even meet people who live in the same area, and meeting up for real will become possible.

Reconnect with old friends

If you’re struggling to make new friends, it might be time than you tried to connect with some old friends. You never know which ones might still be living in the same area, even if it has been years since you last spoke to them. Connect with the friends you really got along with well, and invite them to meet up for a drink or a coffee in order to catch up on what’s been going on in the last few years.

Be friendly and outgoing

Finally, you’ll find that it’s much more difficult to make friends if you’re not very friendly yourself. Sometimes, you have to cast aside any worries, be yourself and simply be nice to people. You’ll soon discover that people start to like you and want to spend more time in your company.

When Diets Go Bad – Moving On From Disordered Eating

It’s hard to talk about diets without talking about the other elephant in the room — disordered eating. It takes a lot of different forms, so it’s hard to break it down into terms like anorexia or bulimia. Those are not the only ways that disordered eating can manifest. If you’re really wanting to think about trying to have a healthy life, you need to conquer the mental game of losing weight. We’ve written about it before, but we really never expanded on why this stuff is so important. The truth is that you have to think about the mental game to prevent yourself from falling into really bad eating patterns.

If you let a diet get out of control, it can really take over your life. If you’re thinking about food constantly, you get in the way of a lot of time to actually live. You will need to make sure that you’re always thinking about the bigger picture. There is no dress that is worth damaging your health just to it into. We’re not trying to be sexist here — after all, men do have eating disorders as well. You have to make sure that you’re always thinking about treating your body with the best of care.

disordered eating
The downside to getting caught up in eating disorders of any kind is that they really do play hell on your metabolism. This means that once you heal from the eating disorder, you might actually find that it’s really hard to lose weight. This is because you’ve proved to the body that you’ll enter starvation mode on purpose, therefore it tries to protect you from just about anything and everything that it possibly can. It’s the only way to go, really, and the body knows exactly how to take care of things for you. It will regulate your metabolism up or down based on what it thinks you need to do. Starving your body is like telling your body that there isn’t going to be food for a long time, therefore the body needs to hold onto fat.

It’s the way we’re wired.

If you’re dealing with an eating disorder, you need to make sure that you’re not doing it on your own. Even if you think that you’re strong enough to fight things on your own, you still don’t want to try to do this on your own. It makes a lot more sense trying to get someone that can really stand by you when things get rough. That’s truly the best way to have a bright, shining future still waiting for you.

The consequences of an eating disorder can actually be quite severe. You might find that your skin is constantly dry, your hair is falling out and periods actually stop. Again, everyone is different — these are just some symptoms that seem to affect girls who strive to be “skinny” at all costs.

Again, we’re not trying to pick on anyone. But we would be out of place as a diet blog to not discuss responsible dieting. Take your time — this is not a race. You aren’t going to win a prize if you drop weight faster than your friends. You don’t have to put your life on hold just because you’re not at your goal weight. You need to always make sure that you’re thinking about the bigger picture — your health, of course! Good luck!
